Flores 1 Jorge Flores Mr. Bastow ENG 11B 25 September 2017 The Struggles of Mental Retardation The world it is as we know is full of intelligent people who are able to function and care for themselves. It is the mentally handicapped minority that struggles day by day to perform the tasks that an average person can perform with ease. In the story Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck, one of the main characters suffers from mental retardation. Throughout the story Steinbeck emphasizes just how difficult it is for someone like Lennie, a main character in the story who is plagued by mental retardation, to use common sense while performing daily activities. As a result of this Lennie relies on another character, George, to assist him with his everyday tasks as well as to direct him in the right direction. Lennie is described by Steinbeck as a “huge man” with a “shapeless face” a pair of “large pale eyes” with “wide, sloping shoulders”(2) that drags his feet as well. Due to his large frame and ridiculous strength Lennie is a force to be reckoned with.

As a current student on this bumpy collegiate pathway, I stumbled upon Course Hero, where I can find study resources for nearly all my courses, get online help from tutors 24/7, and even share my old projects, papers, and lecture notes with other students.

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
