1 Name_____ PP 315-601 – Lecture Quiz #2 September 27, 2007 1. Plants have evolved three plant defense strategies. List and define the one strategy that you think is the most important in plant defense against plant pathogens. Why do you consider this strategy the most important? (3 pts) Resistance to a pathogen is a plant’s best defense against disease. Resistance is the plants ability to prevent or reduce a pathogen from infecting a host. A plant that can prevent a pathogen from infecting it has complete resistance and a plant that reduces the chances of infection has partial resistance. Resistance is most important because unlike tolerance and avoidance it hinders the pathogen constantly and prevents infection. 2. A) What are preformed resistance mechanisms? B) Give an example of any preformed structural OR preformed chemical mechanism. (2 pts) Bonus: Describe how it works to prevent or suppress disease. (1pt) Performed resistance mechanisms are chemical or structural defenses on a host that exist before a pathogen is present.
