Involves 5 processes occurring: 1. Ovulation 2. Fertilization 3. Cleavage 4. Implantation 5. Gastulation Will form skeletal muscles

Image of page 5
Occurs on day 14 the secondary oocyte is released from the ovary
Image of page 6
2. FERTILIZATION 2. FERTILIZATION occurs in the fallopian tube The secondary oocyte and the sperm unite … a mature ovum is formed …… and then it becomes a fertilized ovum (zygote)
Image of page 7
Image of page 8
The zygote is a single cell that has 46 chromosomes. 23 chromosomes from the sperm 23 chromosomes from the oocyte
Image of page 9
Out of the 500 million sperm ejaculated only a few will reach the fallopian tube Only one can fertilize the oocyte It takes 3-5 days for the fertilized egg to travel from the fallopian tube to the uterus During that time the fertilized egg undergoes a process called cleavage

3. CLEAVAGE 3. CLEAVAGE Begins in the fallopian tube Is a rapid cell division (by mitosis)
Image of page 11
Image of page 12
the cells do not increase in size just in number The cell number doubles with each division
Image of page 13
Involves the formation of a solid ball (morula) of 16-32 cells It continues till a hollow ball of cells (blastula/ blastocyst) is formed
Image of page 14
Image of page 15
Implants in the uterus Takes 3-5 days to form consists of two layers of cells: 1. outer 2. inner
Image of page 16
1. The outer forms : extraembryonic structures (E.g. chorion, amnion ) 2. The inner forms: the embryo
Image of page 17
Image of page 18
Involves the blastocyst attaching to the endometrium in the uterus

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
