At first, I'm not at all surprised that Facebook would do something like this. They have long demonstrated an utter lack of concern for the privacy and well-being of their users. But the service is free and nobody is forced to use it so, in the end, you get what you pay for. However, there is no evidence that Facebook research meets the most basic ethic requirements for human subjects research. On the other words, t here are so many unethical things about the way the research was conducted and came to be published in a reputable academic journal that it's hard to know where to start, e.g The Federal Policy for the Protection of Human Subjects or the “Common Rule”.
