1 After reading the essays of Michael F. Holt and Bruce Levine, I believe that Professor Holt has a more agreeable argument than Professor Levine. In Michael F. Holt essay “The Political Division That Contributed to Civil War,” his argument was that the sectional conflict between the North and South has been going on for decades; however, the political process breakdown is what led Americans down the road to the Civil War. In his essay, he argues that there are a lot of unanswered questions to what were the causes for the Civil War other than the main answer being slavery. The North and South conflicts about slavery has been going on for three-fourths of a century; however, the nation were able to control situation. If slavery was the main cause to the Civil War, Why didn’t the fight start years before?. That is where politicians fills in the blanks, throughout the 1850s there would debates, proposals, famous novels, and parties disbandment.
