Bill Joy had been voted " Most Studious Student " by his graduating class at his High School came to the University of Michigan the year the Computer Center first opened. He was sixteen. From that point on, the Computer Center was hi s life. He programmed whenever he could . In 1975, he enrolled in graduate school at the U niversity of California at Berkeley. Joy, at Berkeley in collaboration with a small group of programmers, took on the task of rewriting UNI X , which was a software system developed by AT& T for mainframe computers. Joy's version was very good. It was so good, in fact, that it became-and re mains-the operating system on which literally milli ons of computers around the world run. Cofounded Sun Microsystems, which was one of th e most critical players in the computer revolution. There he rewrote another computer language- Java.
