Joshua A. CouchmanBIZ 4911VITA InternshipDr. Lambdin3/16/20185TH Week Reflection Volunteer Income Tax AssistantDuring the Spring of 2018, I have the opportunity to intern here at OhioNorthern University through the Volunteer Income Tax Assistant program. During this internship, I have become certified in preparing income taxes for clients who have earned less than $54,000 for the 2017 tax year, excluding some areas, such as farming. My supervisor for this internship is Dexter Woods, who has run this program for many years. During this internship, I have received training through sites like Tax Slayer Practice Lab. This site is helpful because it gives real world examples of situations that may arise in the completion of income taxes for clients. We complete practice returns, which helps me understand what I need to do upon meeting with a real client. I also had training from Dr. Woods in Taxation 1, which I am currently enrolled in. During the first five weeks of this internship, I have connected with many clients, as well as my fellow co-workers and interns. During Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday, I attend VITA. These days are when income tax returns are done in person through the program. During this time, I typically meet with two to three clients per night. During the preparation of a client’s income taxes, I was able to connect with the individual by communicating

with them and engaging in conversation. I was able to occasionally ask them questions to which they usually enjoyed answering, such as where they are from, or if they had any pets or kids. I would try to find similarities that I could relate to their answer, and then I would be able to carry on conversation from there. I would also allow them to always finish their answer before I brought up a question referring to their tax return. One unique factor about this internship is the availability of my supervisor during the Volunteer Income Tax Assistant hours of operation. Oursupervisor is not physically present; however, he has his cell phone on him atall times in the circumstance of needing him for questions. This is a great
