Corinne Roonan Miss Martin AP English Literature and Composition 9 April 2018 Dancing is Happiness While “kicking and rolling about the Fair Grounds, swinging their butts,” the people dancing in The Kermess, the muse for “The Dance” by William Carlos Williams, experience unbound happiness. “The Dance” finds its purpose not only in describing a poignant painting by Pieter Bruegel the Elder, but in creating a world where happiness thrives in the hearts of humanity as a whole. Not only are the subjects of the poem enjoying their time, but they enjoy their time despite any obstacles, creating a resonating theme of happiness and the possibility of it for everyone. As the poem begins, Williams introduces the topic and advances into describing the subjects of the painting. “The dancers go round, they go round and around;” this repetition of round and around works to show these people dance with no clear end point. They dance to the sounds of bagpipes, bugles, and fiddle “tipping their bellies” with every turn. Williams also
