Midterm Passages Torah/Law in Second Temple Judaism 1. Jesus Ben Sira, c. 175 BCE Chapter 1: If you desire wisdom, keep the commandments, and the Lord will lavish her upon you. Chapter 2: Those who fear the Lord seek to please him, and those who love him are filled with his law. Chapter 10: Whose offspring are worthy of honour? Human offspring. Whose offspring are worthy of honour? Those who fear the lord. Whose offspring are unworthy of honour? Human offspring. Whose offspring are unworthy of honour? Those who break commandments - Knowledge and wisdom come from commandments - To have honour and fulfill your life, you must fear god - If you break commandments, you are not loved by god Chapter 15: - She means wisdom or law - Wisdom= having a good life - Wisdom gives you love and mother and break (all good things) Chapter 27-28: - Not about keeping commandments and getting honour, but choices you make will come back to you - God keeps track of people’s sins- when you forgive others, god will forgive you. - All wrongs you do will come back to you (karma) Summary of Ben Sira: - Why are commandments important? - It makes society and you function you should forgive others and do commandments - It is also important for knowledge can only get wisdom from commandments
