2347G Final Exam Notes Date: April 22, 2014 Week 7: Love Thy Neighbour Second Temple Sources 12. Beware my son, of every kind of fornication. First of all, marry a woman from amond descendants of your ancestors; do not marry a foreign woman who is not of your fatehr’s tribe. 13. So now my son, love your kindred. They were blessed in their children, and in your heart do not disdain your kindred, the sons and daughters of your people, by refusing to take a wife for yourself among them. For in pride there is ruin and great confusion. And in idleness there is loss and dire poverty, because idleness is in the mother of famine. - Stay within Jewish people, foreigners are bad - Do not intermarry - Don’t get involved with others - Do not mess with non-Jews 14. “Do not keep over until the next day the wages of those who work for you, but pay them at once. If you serve god you will receive payment. Watch yourself, my son, in everything you do, and disciplne yourself in all your conduct. And what you hate, do not do to anyone. Do not drink wine to excess or let drunkenness go with you on your way. [Tobit 4] - “and what you hate”- hate is broad, love is narrow - Tobit wrote 12, 13, and 14 - Author does something strange with love commandment in his interpretation - He is making it personal, he says not everyone hates the same things (verse 15) - Love people only close to you, not anyone outside your group o Only your own people and family neighbour is taken literally - Must exclude outsiders- this is a very narrow perspective New Testament: 34. When the Pharisees heard that he has silenced the Saducees, they gathered together, and one of them a lawyer asked him a question to test him. “Teacher, which commandment in the law is the greatest?” He said to him: “’You shall love the wlord with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind.’ This is the greatest and first commandment. And a second is like it: ‘You shall love thy neighbour as yourself.’ On these two commandmnts hand all the law and the prophets.” [Matthew 22] - Love your neighbour like you love god - By putting it in the context as love your lord, he is creating a divine thought of love - Divine love leads to good relationships

o First love god and then you love human kind – the ordering shows the importance of how to love Paul: Owe no one anything, except to love one another; for the one who loves another has fulfilled the law. The commandments, “You shall not commit adultery; you shall not murder; you shall not steal; you shall not covet”; and any other commandment are summed up in this word: “love your neighbour as yourself.” Love does no wrong to a neighbour, therefore, love is the fulfilling of the law. [Romans 13] - Only thing a person needs to do is love - You don’t need laws, only worry about love - If you love everyone, you wont do any wrongs or sins - Good attitude=good acts therefore, love and you will be good - If you don’t love you are breaking the law - Attitude leads to the action once you have love don’t worry about anything else,
