Living the Bible: Second Term Notes Week 7 (Love Thy Neighbour) Love your neighbor as you love yourself definitions: 1) - Means you cant love someone else more than you love yourself - Cannot have someone that is higher than you, and everyone should be treated in the same respect as yourself - Don’t want someone to be self absorbed when dealing with you, they should give you the same respect they give themselves - No one should feel superior to others - Same respect is this an attitude or an action? o Attitude- if you are a positive person, then people will be positive back o Actions come from a good attitude o If someone opens the door for you, influence your attitude to change your action and open the door for another - Example: Cheating on spouse o Feeling of betrayal by someone you love o You may not like them as much as you did before, but still have to treat with respect o If roles were reversed you would want to opportunity to explain yourself and redeem yourself o Attitude of civility and respect - If you are in a situation with being betrayed, you want respect and not hatred - “You shall reprimand your neighbor” o Cannot hate another, must still love o Explain where a person went wrong, doesn’t have to be aggressive and mean o Have a loving attitude while reprimanding 2) - Love the way you want a friend to love, lover to love you, family to love you, government to take care of you, and don’t take more than needed o Love everyone equally in the scenarios that they occur in o Different kinds of love and treat each different part of your life with the different part of love - Love other people as you want to be loved by others - Example: Mother who steals groceries for her children o Governmental/political loyalty love needs to be more than just following government policy? o Do more than just the law? Have empathy and have care Go beyond the actual surface and explore each situation individually

3) - Don’t hate your family and speak your mind - Peace not war - God intended it to be this way o You can’t judge other people, you need to love people regardless o God gives us the ability to act but we still have to act properly - Example: 2 pairs of parents are good friends then they get drunk and have sex – parents who get cheated on are upset not at the spouse, but at the family, girls stay really good friends secretly o They kept their family close, but judged someone outside of their family o They can speak their mind in a pleasant way, but then make peace and not hold this grudge - Actions rather than attitudes Interpretations of Love thy Neighbour (Second Temple Sources) - Tobit 4 o Very strange things being done with this love commandment o Don’t love anyone else outside of your group – emphasis on neighbour and taking neighbour to mean family – don’t love foreigners o Maybe it means to exclude people who aren’t close to you o Sounds similar to the dead sea scrolls text to stay within Judaism and not mess around with non-Jews - Matthew 22 o

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
