Unit Seven: Mythology & Folklore Text Questions Review Questions 1. Which myths and legends are common to many cultures? A team of cultural anthropologists led by Dr. Jamie Tehrani recently was able to track the Little Red Riding Hood story to a common ancestor that is over 2,600 years old. He found thirty-five different versions and identified 70 differences in story elements like character and plot, but all had the same basic langue and common mythemes. Common themes show that humans have similar psychological needs such as hope and purpose. The story of Cinderella is a good example of this. The oldest-known version of Cinderella comes from Egypt, and it was told thousands of years before the cartoon was created. Only instead of Cinderella, her name was Rhodopis. She wore sandals instead of glass slippers, and married a pharaoh instead of a prince. The story's theme is hope. Stories of the oppressed triumphing over tyrants and the possibility of changing one's circumstances gives hope to those who hear the tales. Like Cinderella, many myths and legends tell the same story or illustrate the same theme with differences based solely on culture. As people spread out, their myths and legends changed to reflect their surroundings. People also adapted stories they heard as they traveled along trade routes and sailed to various ports. 2.How do historical linguists trace a legend back to its roots?
