You wonder why a robber, who is probably a repeating offender, have a gun. As guaranteed by the Second Amendment, American citizens are legally entitled to gun ownership. However, guns are notorious for their use in school and other mass shootings, for example, the recent Florida and Maryland shootings. They rekindled the movement for stricter gun control laws, the argument being we have to prevent the weapons from falling into the wrong hands, especially in cases of domestic abuse and stalking. Stricter gun control laws are a must because legally owned guns are frequently stolen and used by criminals. In addition, the Second Amendment is not an unlimited right to own guns, so the right to gun ownership can be subjected to regulation like any other right. America has the highest gun ownership rate in the world at 88.8 guns per 100 Americans due to tradition protected by the Second Amendment Constitutional guarantee. But gun control laws are traditions as long-standing as gun ownership and the Second Amendment, if not even older. They are needed today as well. Justice Antonin Scalia, LLB, agreed when he wrote for the US Supreme Court majority opinion in District of Columbia et al. v. Heller , “Like most rights, the right secured by the Second Amendment is not unlimited…nothing in our opinion should be taken to cast doubt on longstanding prohibitions on the possession of firearms by felons and the mentally ill, or laws forbidding the carrying of firearms in sensitive places such as schools and
