Based on “To kill the mocking bird” chapter 8-11, factors that influence our moral growth are the environment and our own conscience. That is to say, while we have such thing called “angel of mind”, our behaviors are affected by the external factor known as social norms. To exemplify, the story was set in the time when the society holds discriminations and biased opinions toward the African America. Thus, this train of thought becomes a generalization for everyone, including Scout. Along the time she had been with her friends, she learned insulting words indicating the black and maintained her prejudice to them. However, it was until she knew about her father’s defense for the black man that she realize the importance of her self-respect as well as her dad’s. To be specific, she had conflicts with Francis, since he called her dad a “ nigger-lover ”. Stated differently, the sense of self-respect guided Scout in this situation
