Module 9 Activity: Images of Wettest Journey 1. Before his journey to India, Middleton became an avid reader of The Times of India in order to become more informed about the monsoons. He finds the conditions to be devastating as heavy rains and widespread floods are already occurring in the lowlands, but there are no updates about the North-East region where he will be heading. 2. In the first chapter Middleton gives us some background about where he will be heading. He plans to visit the wettest place on earth, a village in North-East India known as Mawsynram.

3. The author arrives in Calcutta, India, which is a city that, like most in India, always has streets packed with people and are often bumper to bumper. Middleton states that “the streets were suspiciously dry” when he got there. 4. Middleton’s first mission in Calcutta was to get passport photographs taken for his Bangladeshi visa application form. He needed this in order to travel to Mawsynram.

5. After settling in and making his way across Calcutta, Middleton travels with Runa – his Bengali translator – to search for a Bangladeshi delicacy known as Hilsa. Hilsa is a saltwater fish that migrates to freshwater rivers to lay their eggs. During their migration is when they are caught, and the people are crazy about it. 6. Runa took Middleton to a party where he has a conversation about Meghalaya with an interior decorator. They talk about how the name of this state translates to “abode of the clouds” because there is such an abundance of clouds in this area due to the condensation of the moisture rich air.

7. While eating at the dinner party, Middleton mentions listening to a police inspector who was giving him a synopsis of the conditions to be expected once the rain arrives. The police inspector explains to Middleton that the roads get so bad during monsoon season that rickshaw wallahs are known for becoming the primary form of transportation. 8. At the end of the first chapter, Middleton shares with us the news he was reading about Orissa that was completely underwater. He mentioned photographs of people pushing possessions on makeshift rafts. Middleton also shared that he was disappointed he hasn’t seen any rains yet, despite being in the midst of monsoon season.

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
