1.In experiment 1, the presence of cuckold males caused the nest owners to reduce their egg guarding. When no rivals were present their egg guarding was rated 80+-10, but when a rival was present, they reduced their guarding significantly to 52+-7. (they were less invested)The presence of cuckold males did not cause the nest owners to reduce their offspring guarding. When no rivals were present their offspring guarding was rated 90+-10 and when the rival was present, their guarding was 95+-10. Nest owners likely perceived the risk of cuckoldry greater when rival males were present. As a consequence, they may estimate their paternity certainty as lower and therefore reduce their egg guarding investment. However, these fish are able to determine whether offspring are genetic relatives--the presence of the rival males does not influence their guarding of the offspring--they have complete paternity certainty and the value of investment in offspring guarding is unchanged.
