1. In experiment 1, the presence of cuckold males caused the nest owners to reduce their egg guarding. When no rivals were present their egg guarding was rated 80+-10, but when a rival was present, they reduced their guarding significantly to 52+-7. (they were less invested) The presence of cuckold males did not cause the nest owners to reduce their offspring guarding. When no rivals were present their offspring guarding was rated 90+-10 and when the rival was present, their guarding was 95+-10. Nest owners likely perceived the risk of cuckoldry greater when rival males were present. As a consequence, they may estimate their paternity certainty as lower and therefore reduce their egg guarding investment. However, these fish are able to determine whether offspring are genetic relatives--the presence of the rival males does not influence their guarding of the offspring--they have complete paternity certainty and the value of investment in offspring guarding is unchanged.
