The participants were instructed to produce an inner sound at a specific given time while an audible sound was continuously playing in their headphones. The study was an experimental design. The variables included in the study were sounds that the volunteers were listening to (independent variable) and inner speech (dependent variable)as measured by internal forward model (IFM). The results of the study show that the brain produces an efference copy for inner speech. The authors concluded that inner speech is associated with an efference copy even without audible speech.The study used human subjects which led researchers to conclude that inner speech is associated with efference copy only when the content of the inner speech matched audible speech.
