Unit II Social capital - Democratic + civic habits of discussion, compromise, and respect for differences, which grow out of participation in voluntary organizations. Political culture - The widely shared beliefs, values, and norms concerning the relationship of citizens to government and to one another Political socialization - The process, most notably in families + schools, by which we develop our political attitudes, values, and beliefs. Popular sovereignty - A belief that ultimate power resides in the people. Due process - (Amendment X) Limit power of national govt; prohibit state govt from depriving any person of life, liberty, or property w/o due process of law. Capitalism - An economic system characterized by private property, competitive markets, economic incentives, + limited government involvement in the production + pricing of goods and services. Antitrust legislation - Federal laws (starting w/ Sherman Act of 1890) that try to prevent a monopoly from dominating an industry and restraining trade. Regulation - Efforts by govt. to alter the free operation of the market to achieve social goals such as protecting workers + environment. Political ideology - A consistent pattern of beliefs about political values + role of govt. Liberalism - A belief in the positive uses of vote to bring about justice + equality of opportunity. Conservatism - A belief that limited govt, ensures order, competitive markets, and personal opportunity. Socialism - An economic and governmental system based on public ownership of the means of production/ distribution/exchange. Libertarianism - Ideology that cherishes individual liberty and insists on a sharply limited govt promoting a free market economy, a non- interventionist foreign policy, and an absence of regulation in the moral + social spheres. Environmentalism - Ideology that is dominated by concern for the environment but also promotes grassroots democracy, social justice, equal opportunity, nonviolence, respect for diversity, and feminism. Ethnocentrism - Belief in the superiority of one's nation/ethnic group Demographics - The study of the characteristics of populations. Political predisposition - A characteristic of individuals that's predictive of political behavior. Reinforcing cleavages - Divisions within society that reinforce one another, making groups more homogeneous or similar. Cross-cutting cleavages - Divisions within society that cut across demographic categories to produce groups that are more heterogeneous or different. Ethnicity - A social division based on national origin, religion, language, and often race.
