NURS 6051: Transforming Nursing and Healthcare Through Information TechnologyMain Question Post Key Functional Areas of Nursing Informatics Relevant to Current Practice Technology in healthcare has quickly become an essential part of our everyday workflow, therefore it is necessary to ensure that nurses in all fields of nursing are competent in informatics (American Nurses Association [ANA], 2015). The implementation of the electronic health record (EHR) has changed nursing practice by improving communication and allowing nurses to have access to crucial information faster (McGonigle & Mastrian, 2018). The functional area of nursing informatics most relevant to my current practice is “Quality and Performance Improvement” (ANA, 2015, p. 32). In my current role, informatics is used to document patient information to improve a patient’s surgical outcomes; specific data is collected to help capture measurable content (ANA, 2015). The information collected supports quality improvement by validating preoperative assessments in preventing the day of surgery cancellations. “Safety, Security, and Environmental Health” is also relevant to my current area of practice as it relates tothe internal environment (ANA, 2015, p. 34). In this aspect of informatics, the internal environment is adjusted to meet the needs of the nurse and patient during their interaction (ANA,2015). During patient interaction, the computer is adjusted so that eye contact can be made with the patient throughout the visit.
