1. Define both cosmological and transcendental religion. Cosmological – systems that see ultimate power answers; reflects nature Transcendental- see the ultimate power as a contrast to a supernatural dimension 2. Present an example or feature included within each specific religion. Cosmological- Hinduism and Greek and Roman mythologies Transcendental – Christianity and Buddhism 3. What is significant about the Axial Age? The Axial age was a period that lasted from about 8 th to 3 rd century. During this time a variety of different cultures, including Indian, Persian, Greek and Chinese all developed similar ways of new thinking. This was when the first transcendental religions emerged. 4. Name three visionaries from this Age. Karl Jaspers – introduced the notion of the axial age in The Origin and Goal of History Mahavira – founded Jainism in South Asia Confucius – proposed a new cultural order based on the harmonization of society according to ideal patterns in human relationships 5. Define each of the three groups of “meta-myth’s” of religion introduced at the beginning of each new unit. Nature – it is the earliest of all foundational myths and dates back to pre-history. It is the foundation for indigenous religions.
