Madoussou Sanogo General Chemistry Lab II Experiment 14 2/19/18 The Introduction to Visible Spectrophotometry Title : Using visible spectrophotometry to determine an unknown concentration. Objective : The objective of this experiment is to determine the unknown concentration of the red dye 40 in a commercial beverage using visible spectrophotometry. Variables: The independent variable is the color of the food and dye and the dependent variable will be the absorbance from the MicroLab. Hypothesis : The concentration of the red dye 40 will fall in between the range of 5.0 x 10 -6 M and 1.0 x 10 -5 M. The scientific method used in determining the unknown concentration is forming a calibration curve with the red dye 40 stock solution. The measurements that will be made in this experiment are the calculation of the absorbance spectrum using a MicroLab, the concentration of the red dye 40 with visible spectrophotometry, and the dilutions needed. The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
