Stefana Avara November 11th, 2017 Persuasive Speech: Why You Should be More Aware of Your Screen Exposure Introduction I. Attention Getter How many hours per day would you say you spend on your phone? Your initial answer is probably maybe a half-hour, an hour at most. But you’re most likely WAY off. II. Audience Relevance Link After listening to this speech, you should be able to understand some of the reasons why unplugging yourself from your technology can benefit you in ways you never thought of. III. Credibility Statement After choosing this topic, I downloaded the app RealizD. Using this app, I tracked how much time I spent on my phone over a one-month span. Would you believe me if I said I spent almost 24 hours on my phone in just a one-week span? IV. Proposition I will provide reasons for why it is beneficial to be more aware of the amount of time you spend in front of a screen. V. Preview First, I will describe some general statistics regarding cell phone usage in the United States. Second, I will discuss some of the research done on the effects of extensive phone usage throughout the day; third, I will examine a few suggestions for how to be more cognizant of the amount of time you spend using your phone. Transition: While using technology every day is practically inevitable, it is important to be aware of how much time you spend infront of screens. One example of a way to do this is using the app RealizD to track the amount of time you spend on your phone each day. Body I. I had three friends of mine download RealizD, an app specifically designed to track how often you use your phone, how many times you pick it up per day, and what hours you are on your phone the most. I tracked their phone usage over the span of one week. A. Subject Number One: My Roommate, Riley Norman 1. My roommate guessed that she spends about 2 hours on her phone every day and that she picks up her device about 60-70 times a day. Wrong. By the end of a 7-day period, she had picked up her phone more than 120 times per day , with an average screen time of close to 5 hours per day.
