Florez 1 Marc A. Florez Professor Robert Lee Furrow New Student Experience, SLS 1122 February 26, 2018 Purpose Paper In 2001, at the young age of 2 years old, my mother felt it was important for me to learn how to swim. I was taken to weekly swimming classes at the local YMCA and for the next four years, it was part of my daily routine. That’s the earliest memory I have of my love for the water. My mother always planned our family vacations that included water activities. I have snorkeled in the Virgin Islands, scuba-dived in Aruba and have gone cave diving in the Isla de la Mujeres, Mexico. I have always been intrigued with snorkeling and exploring below the water surface since I was a child. It was second nature to me, as breathing air. As a young person entering college, I asked myself how can I incorporate my love for the ocean into a career of choice? I have taken a closer look at my personality, my core values, my interests and passions, my strengths, talents and skills. My academic purpose it to have strong solid grades in my core courses to guarantee myself a place in a prestigious school that specializes in marine world. My career goal is to be able to incorporate my love for the ocean with a career that brings awareness and education to people related to the marine world. My personal goal is to make honors and/or the Dean’s List at least one semester. I also want to be the second member of my immediate family on my mother’s side to graduate from college with a degree. My purpose in life is to continuously grow and use my educational knowledge to bring awareness to others about the ocean and to be able to design, construct vessels or equipment that are safe and green friendly for ocean marine life for years to come.
Florez 2 It is important to understand and know your values. One needs clarity to know what exactly is most important in your daily life. The academic values that are most important to me are: dedication and devotion. Dedication is the act of being committed to a purpose. Devotion is the act of being loyal to a person, thing or cause. These are the values that are most important
