Data can be kept in a text file (e.g. comma delimited files), an application-specific file (e.g. an Excel file), or in a database management system. A Database Management System, or DBMS, is a suite of computer software providing the interface between users and databases. A DBMS can host many databases in which we can organize and store our data.

They are single-user databases and need very little effort to manage. Popular databases, such as MySQL, MariaDB, PostgreSQL, Oracle, MS SQL Server, etc. are meant to provide a shared repository of enterprise data. The data are frequently accessed by thousands or millions or billions of users. The database management system in this case needs to be carefully managed.

MariaDB is a community-developed fork of the MySQL relational database management system intended to remain free. Development is led by some of the original developers of MySQL, who forked it due to concerns over its acquisition by Oracle Corporation. MariaDB is an enhanced, drop-in replacement for MySQL. In this course, when we say MySQL, we mean most of the time the MariaDB because that was installed in your laptop when you ran XAMPP installation. As a current student on this bumpy collegiate pathway, I stumbled upon Course Hero, where I can find study resources for nearly all my courses, get online help from tutors 24/7, and even share my old projects, papers, and lecture notes with other students.

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
