1 ME 3E05 (2017-2018) Assignment # 3 [1]. (2 marks) The ball and socket joint at the end of a rocker arm has a hardened steel spherical surface of 10 mm diameter fitting in a hard-bronze bearing alloy seat of 10.2 mm diameter. Assume the following material properties for steel ball and bronze seat. Material Elastic Modulus Poisson’s Ratio Yield Strength Steel 207 GPa 0.292 910 MPa Hard-bronze 111 GPa 0.349 260 MPa [a]. What maximum contact stress will result from a load of 2000 N? [b]. Determine the limit load value that the bronze seat can tolerate before it yields. [c]. Compute and plot the contact stress components, , and z x xz for loads 500 N and 750 N as a function of z values up to 3 times the contact patch radius into both the steel ball and bronze seat. Please make 2 separate graphs for steel ball and bronze seat. Each graph should have 6 curves corresponding to 3 stress components and 2 loads. Plot all stress components in terms of their absolute values.

### What students are saying

• As a current student on this bumpy collegiate pathway, I stumbled upon Course Hero, where I can find study resources for nearly all my courses, get online help from tutors 24/7, and even share my old projects, papers, and lecture notes with other students.

• I cannot even describe how much Course Hero helped me this summer. It’s truly become something I can always rely on and help me. In the end, I was not only able to survive summer classes, but I was able to thrive thanks to Course Hero.

• The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
