Lab 7: Exercise Heart Rate and Caloric Cost of Physical Activity Lab Section 17, 11/13/17, 11:30-12:50 Pawan Kumar 1 Introduction: To demonstrate our knowledge of cardio fitness and aerobic functioning, we performed various intensity physical activity, which consist of walking, a slow jog, and lastly a fast jog. To develop a better understanding for overall health and body awareness, we measured heart rate along with oxygen intake through VO 2 levels. VO 2 is the rate at which your heart and lungs can efficiently carry oxygen to your muscles that need oxygen. VO 2 for this lab will be estimated based on our heart rates relation to changes in running speed. The purpose of this lab is to help you become familiar with the response of your heart rate to three different intensities of exercise and their associated oxygen uptakes and caloric expenditures. Methods: Before completing the various walking and jogging exercises, we first recorded our resting heart rate and blood pressure. We first completed 800m of walking, then 800m of slow jogging, then lastly 800m of fast jogging, timing each interval. Throughout the lab, we recorded heart rate immediately after completion of each intensity, along with two minutes and five minutes following the jogging. To calculate our speed, we timed our laps around the track with the various intensities and were able to get our maximum VO 2 . The purpose of this lab is to help us become familiar with the response of our heart rate to three different intensities of exercise and their associated oxygen uptakes and caloric expenditures.
