Lewis English 205 Literature of the Western World Professor: Dr. Caramine White July 3, 2017 Literary Analysis of Oedipus the King I am doing my literary analysis of “Oedipus the King.” This is a narration about a man who became king after the previous king was murdered. Here we learn a lot about Oedipus’s conflicting nature in what is right and what is wrong and that he refuses to believe he will betray his father and bed his mother. This narration shows how a lifetime of choices made trying to avoid the truth will only end in disaster. Oedipus learned that he would end up marrying his mother through an Oracle and instead of facing this issue head on he tried to change the outcome, which leads to the eventual reality of what the Oracle said to be true. This is why running from your problems or trying to change them only creates more problems. When faced with the overwhelming evidence of Oedipus and Laius's prophecies, both Oedipus and Jocasta ignore the alarming coincidence of how those two prophecies coincide. Thus leaving Jocasta to commit suicide and Oedipus to blind and banish himself. Oedipus was the king of Thebes and at this time Thebes was suffering from a curse. The curse made it to where the lands could not grow anything and the women could not bare any young because they were all dying from a plague. Oedipus heard the cries of the people and offered them his prayers. He was also worried because all the cattle and the crops were being
