Milestone Three: Bioethics 2 Milestone Three: Bioethics Introduction The provided case details the medical treatment of Theresa “Terri” Schiavo over the duration of fifteen years. Terri collapsed unexpectedly at her home in February of 1990. When medical personal arrived on the scene, Terri was without vital signs of life. She was resuscitated and brought to the hospital where she was diagnosed to have had a sudden cardiac arrest associated with critical hypokalemia. During the cardiac arrest episode, Terri lost oxygen to her brain for an extended period of time and was left with detrimental damage. Two of the attending physicians on the case evaluated Terri and diagnosed her as being in a persistent vegetative state. Characteristics of this PVA detail that a patient may appear to have a normal level of consciousness and alertness but is truly in a deep state of unconsciousness. PVA is an irreversible brain condition. With this condition, Terri was able to breath on her own but required a feeding tube for nutrition and hydration. Her husband, Michael Shiavo was awarded guardianship over Terri by the state of Florida.
