Unformatted text preview: Exam 3 Notes CHILDHOOD OBESITY:-Not a very strong correlation between parents forcing kids to eat, and adiposity-Kids know how much they have to eat from birth (Allow kids to continue to do that) PREVALENCE OF SHORT STATURE: Estimating how tall someone will be: GIRLS: Fathers height 13 cm or 5 inches + Moms Height DIVIDED by 2 BOYS: Fathers height + 13 cm or 5 feet + Moms Height DIVIDED by 2-Frequent cause of short stature is linked to psychosocial or emotional deprivation-Most parents just didnt give them enough tender love and care when they were younger-Rejection and lack of emotional support sometimes suppresses growth production. ETHNIC GROUPS Shortest-> Tallest: Asian pacific islanders Whites Hispanics Blacks LEAD POSIONING:-Occur in parts of the US that have old houses (1950s) -Most common and preventable pediatric health problem today-1 in 3 kids have too much lead in their blood NORMAL BLOOD LEAD LEVELS-Below 10 micrograms per deci liter- Normal-10-14 micrograms per deci liter- Some lead-20-44 micrograms per deci liter- Lead Poisoned NUTRITION AND LEAD POISONING:-Common for children to chew paint and wood-Can become lead poisoned through paint chips, or lead can seep into ground and kids put it in their mouth-Lots of hand to mouth contact exposes children to lead-Lead is in water if you live in an old house w/ lead pipes- let water run for a couple of min to get lead out of pipes-Children can get it through lead in cookware, serving dishes, glazed pottery, fine lead crystal, plastic bags to store food in, canned goods that have lead sottered seams and when exposed to air, if food contains acid it can see in NUTRITION CONNECTION:-If you have enough calcium in your body it protects you from lead poisoning-Iron blocks lead from entering the cells (If diets high enough)-Eating 3 meals and snacks leads to a decreased risk of lead poisoning Who Should Be Tested?-Every child under the age of 6 Tests can be stopped at 3 if their past test were all negative SYMPTOMS:-Stomach aches-head aches-Irritability-Change in appetite-Tiredness-Only way to detect is if your child is tested LOW DOSE EFFECTS:-Impaired cognitive skills (cant learn)-Reduced visual motor functioning-Impaired memory and learning disability-Not reversible HIGH DOSE EFFECTS:-Muscle weakness- Leads to Palsy-Reduced nerve conduction-Attention problems *Low income children are at a much greater risk of lead poisoning IRON DEFICIENCY:-Between 6 months- 24 months years- greatest risk of developing iron deficiency anemia 1) iron Depletion: Iron stores are depleted without any loss 2) Iron deficiency without anemia- Lack of iron 3) Anemia- Decrease in hemoglobin-Less than 11 micrograms per deciliter -Hemoglobin-Hematocrit Under than 33%-Lag time b/w depleted stores and an increase of hemoglobin-During lag time kids become more irritability, tired, act out more HOW MUCH IRON DO CHILDREN NEED?...
