Ohlinger 1 Sarah Ohlinger Dr. Paquette MIC 201 5 March 2009 Unknown Lab Report Abstract: The importance of identifying bacteria is critical in discovering new cures for certain diseases. Identifying such bacteria’s can slow down the transmission of infection. With the rapid spread of disease today such discoveries can not only be useful in the medical field, but also in biological warfare and better crop production through pesticides. The purpose of this experiment was to identify and unknown bacteria using proper aseptic technique as well as using several different tests which will be discussed in further detail in the methods and discussion portion of the lab. Certain tests performed include the gram reaction, catalase test, oxidase test, starch test, gelatin test, casein test, nitrate reduction test along with the VP test and the citrate test. After organizing the results from these experiments, I found my unknown to be Staphylococcus epidermidis. Introduction: After testing for my unknown organism, I found that I had Staphylococcus epidermidis. According to Wikipedia, “This organism is a member or the bacterial genus Staphylococcus, which consists of gram positive cocci that are usually on the skin of humans and animals and in the mucous membranes. It is a facultative anaerobe that grows by aerobic respiration.” (1) Clinically, Staphylococcus epidermidis is responsible for a number of infections among hospital patients whom have weakened immune
