UNIT 1 IP 2 In an effort to stay current with an ever-changing world, our elementary school has decided to implement computers in the classrooms for an improved educational experience for our students. A local company was gracious enough to supply enough computers to outfit 6 classrooms plus the library. They also promised to have the remaining 6 classrooms filled with computers next year. I will be developing a network in which each computer will have the ability to communicate with all the other computers in the school along with access to the public internet. Each classroom will be outfitted with 24 computers and a hub. The purpose of the hub is to allow each computer to act independent within the network. Therefore, a failure on one computer does not result in a total network outage.

UNIT 1 IP 3 ITCO650-1801C-01 Unit 1 IP As the IT manager of the Elementary School I have been tasked with setting up a network of computers which were donated to us by a local company. The school has twelve classrooms and one library. Each room can fit a maximum of thirty-two students, however there are currently twenty-four students per classroom. The local company who donated the computers only had enough to outfit six classrooms plus the library which is a total of 168 computers (7 rooms x 24 computer). They promised to fill the remaining six classrooms next year. It was suggested to use a star topology which I agree is an appropriate configuration for this elementary school. As described by Barrett & King (2005), “In a star topology, the computers are connected to a centralized hub by a cable segment” (pg. 96). A hub is a small device which the computers connect to directly to access the internal network and/or internet. This requires some extra cabling but it allows the computer to act independently from the other computers connected to the hub. For instance, in a ring topology, each computer is connected to the computer next to it creating a closed or ring connection. If computer A wanted to talk to computer C, it must pass the information to computer B which will then deliver the message to computer C.
