Dead Messiah (Jews believed Messiah was human and supposed to defeat enemies of Israel) a. How to fix? Prophet Isaiah (53 BCE)—suffering servant passages predicting Jesus of Nazareth, reinterpretation 2. More Gentiles than Jews—why so few followers? a. Mark: Jesus kept them away because would be saved b. John: never intended to be saved 3. Where is the kingdom? a. Message: kingdom of God is coming back b. Church’s purpose = serve functions until Jesus returns c. Kingdom = metaphor; conversion process that takes place d. John begins to make Jesus God 1/15/09 Christianity arose from Judaism
