Challenge Questions- Immunology Biology 152-2 Spring 2009 Congenital neutropenia is a condition in which children are born with a severe reduction of neutrophils. Children often develop infections within the first month of life. a) Which would be affected greater, innate or adaptive immunity? Innate b) How would the inflammatory response be altered? Neutrophils would not migrate to the site and phagocytose microbes c) Would antigen presentation to helper T cells be altered? What cells present antigen to helper T cells? To cytotoxic T cells? Antigen presentation to helper T cells will not be altered. Professional antigen presenting cells (macrophages, dendritic cells, B cells) present antigen to helper T cells. Any nucleated cell can present antigen to cytotoxic T cells, provided they are cancerous or virus-infected. d) What type of infection would be more common in such a patient- bacterial or viral? Why do you think so? Bacterial; neutrophils function to clear bacteria better than they do viruses. Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) is an infection that targets cells of the immune system. In particular, HIV binds to and affects cells helper T cells. When the population of helper T cells falls below a certain limit, that patient has developed acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS). a) Why/how does HIV target helper T cells? HIV binds to CD4, a cell-surface protein expressed almost only on helper T cells. b)
