IntroBio152 - Plant Case 2 Spring 2009 First Aid in a Castaway Garden During spring break you join some friends in a sailing adventure along the coast of Quintana Roo (Mexican State on the Yucatan Peninsula). In La Bahia de Espiritu Santo, events take a turn for the worse when you run aground on a reef, smashing your keel and rupturing the hull. The boat quickly fills with water. Fortunately, the reef is close to shore, and you’re able to salvage most of the boat’s supplies. Unfortunately, you’re now stranded in a very remote location (a vast, roadless wilderness – the Sian Ka’an Biosphere Reserve). Knowing that rescue might take a while (potentially many weeks), you volunteer to spearhead a modest gardening effort. Namely, in a small clearing close to your “camp,” you sow seeds extracted from tomatoes found in the boat’s galley. The project is successful, and in several weeks you have tomatoes ripening on some of the rapidly growing vines. At the same time, however, you observe an alarming increase in
