To: Incoming and Current Hotel School Freshmen From: Jessi Joo, Andrew Vlock, and Jen Gudaz Date: November 23, 2008 Subject: A Freshman Hotelie’s Guide: How to Overcome the Challenges of Freshman Year We are pleased to share “A Freshman Hotelie’s Guide: How to Overcome the Challenges of Freshman Year” with you. Professor Snow assigned us this research project for HA 1165 Managerial Communications. In order for us to complete this project, we interviewed Hotel School Alumni who successfully completed the full Hotel School curriculum from freshman through senior year. In this report, we compiled information from interviewees and academic services support staff. From these information sources, we drew conclusions about what it takes to successfully complete freshman year by overcoming the challenges of freshman year. By reading and understanding all the topics and conclusions addressed in this report, you will be able to recognize and prepare for many of the challenges that freshmen commonly face during their first year at the Hotel School. Although you are encouraged to read and draw conclusions about our entire report, we understand that you may feel that you will not benefit from and will not need some of the advice we have provided. Due to limited time and resources, we were not able to touch upon every challenge of the first year in college; therefore, our report is limited in both scope and depth.

Additionally, the information we provided and our conclusions came directly from six interview sources. Although we believe our interviewees are highly qualified and accepted as excellent examples of successful hotel school students, we understand that every hotel school student measures success differently. Therefore, our approach and the approach to overcome the
