History 9/29/08 Cash Money Italy became flooded with cash due to merchant trade in the Mediterranean and the silk road. Their money moved to the east. Most just used Venetian coins, even in the Arab and Asian worlds Trade is the process that drives the economy of the time. o Lead to the discovery of the entire globe in the 1400s to 1500s. o In Europe, these discoveries allowed people to redraw their mental map of the world, and it disproved many truths throughout history Silks worn by Europeans were produced in Asia and the middle East. o Silk is very colorful and beautiful. Stark contrast to the shitty robes of the middle ages and brown cloth. o European elites also wanted spices from the far East. i.e. saffron, and other spices. Kept Europeans from tasting the rotting meat. o European cuisine of this time looks very much like Indian cuisine today. Very spicy and colorful Some valuable seasonings could be grown in the warmer parts of Europe. First time extraneous plants are grown in limited areas in Europe. Most spices (inc. Pepper and Cinnamon) could be grown nowhere but the tropics, so they had to trade for them Mongols controlled much of Asia. Warlike, semi-nomadic, and very successful. o
