Freud’s  Civilization and Its Discontents  (Continued) 22/04/2008 13:22:00 Get Notes from Dave (from missed class) Eros- the erotic love instinct The Death Instinct (Aggression) The Tri-partheid Soul (sort of) Id  (when we’re born)- stays with us unconsciously. Always working even  though we don’t know it. o Sometimes our dreams are a way of getting into our id. o Also, slips of the tongue are, according to Freud, the id talking. Instinct  1. Love-erotic love- Eros Initially it is consumed with erotic love, but we can  develop from it aim-inhibited love (the basis in  your unconscious of all friendships). What brings  people together. A powerful instinct within you that  you can act on sexually, but more often than not,  you don’t. Builds families, communities, etc. 2.Death-aggression Ego -we develop it as we begin to differentiate ourselves from the outside  world.  Super-Ego -your conscious.  o Makes us feel guilty when we do something wrong or when we think of  doing something wrong. When we’re young, sometimes we do something wrong and get
