05/13/09 Physics 122 - Lecture 14 6 Plumber’s Analogy P 1 P 2 Pump Constriction I I High pressure Low pressure The “plumber’s analogy” of this circuit is a pump (=battery) pumping water in a closed loop of pipe that includes a constriction (=resistor). The pressure (=P 1 ) is the upper part of the loop is higher than in the lower part (=P 2 ). There is a pressure drop (=P 1 -P 2 ) across the constriction and a pressure rise across the pump. The water flow I is the same at all points around the loop.
