Lecture 3 – Using the Literature Reading the Literature - Need to understand what has already been written about a topic before you can ask a new question or develop a new way of answering an old question o Knowledge in related fields is also important o Establishes competence as a researcher o Can learn from other’s mistakes Importance of the Literature Review - Need to consult the literature to assist in fully defining the problem o Conceptual literature Books/articles written by experts Seminal/influential pieces o Related research Previous studies in the same area Previous studies in a related area Purposes of the Literature Review - Gain an understanding of previous research work - Develop a theoretical understanding of the topic - Identify a question - Refine the question into a specific problem - Serves as the basis for hypothesis development - Provides valuable information for study design o Participants (e.g. how many, population?) o Methodology (e.g. duration of the study) o Tools (e.g. surveys, direct measures, etc.)
