The AIDS epidemic and American Theatre in the 1980s and 1990s o AIDS=Acquired Immune Deficiency  Syndrome  o AIDS was first identified in the USA in 1981 o The epidemic has now spread to every part of the USA and to all sectors of  society. o It is thought that more than one million people are living with HIV in the USA and  that more than half a million have died after developing AIDS o AIDS have been around since the 40's and 50's    There is a big resecession in the late 80's early 90's o Lots of economic hardship o 23 regional theatres close between 1987 and 1995 o In 1990- the national endowment for the arts - comes under fire and gets its  budget cut The NEA used to give money to individual artists Now they give it to large companies and the artists get it from them.   o Mega Concept Musical Cats, Phantom of the Opera, Le Miserable.
