Necessity Main Idea: how humans, plants animals adapt to different temperatures and weather situations - Organisms vary their temperature by muscular activity o Shivering in humans Pg4 o Lizards do push-ups on a sunny day or lie still to cool down Pg3 - Anasazi Indians – cliff dwellings (also mentioned in class) create a microclimate - Heat regulation through the circulation of blood flow o An example of this is flushing of the body, sweating - Humans – have no fur, but goose bumps are remnant of an ancestral habit of fluffing the fur - Fat thickens also as a response to cold climates - Humans have the greatest variety of thermal strategies available to them - Migration – is expensive, so people migrate within a smaller area - Designs for the Environment o Igloos – cold/snow o Clay/stone – warm climates o Cliff-sides / Huts- warm o Light materials- hot/ humid (like reeds/bamboo) - Fire- allows humans a third mechanism, independent of their metabolism o Vitruvius – saying how the discovery of fire originally gave rise to coming together - Chimney – Absorbs heat and reradiates it back to the room Pg13. o Stove/ furnace o Air conditioning – Willis Carrier - Air Conditioning – controlled by the temperature of the water - Sensitivity of perception – a slight change of temperature can be noticed by a lot of people Page 1 Each species of plant or animal has definite limits within which it can survive Land temperature variations are more dynamic than the ocean, forcing animals to evolve or develop strategies for surviving in climate swings Plants are deciduous o By dropping their leaves, they reduce their exposure to temperature extremes Animals do the same thing, but they increase or decrease their metabolic rate to change their temperature Animals, as opposed to plants, can move place to place to find a more preferable thermal environment o Migration On a smaller scale, animals take advantage of their landscapes by finding the right locations to live, like snake holes Cold blooded animals rely on the sun for warmth, but warm blooded animals can move to increase our metabolic rates Over long periods of time mammals can raise their basal metabolic rate to acclimate to the cold We can shiver to keep our insides warm Sweating allows us to release our excess heat Birds cant sweat, so they bath in water during hot times of the day Fat helps us store food energy and also keeps us warm, Page 5 Basic animal defenses to climate control o Humans have a layer of fat that provides warmth
