Biology January 24, 2008 The Prokaryotes- Chapter 27 CQ: Maximum parsimony—Keep it simple theory. “Prokaryotes”= bacteria + archaea Paraphyletic= grouping in which some but not all the descendents of a common ancestor is portrayed Polypheletic= some organisms but not the common ancestor Prokaryotes Rule o They are everywhere o Our lives depend on them o Collective biological mass of prokaryotes is amazing o In a handful of soil you can have up to 10,000 species of prokaryotes o Tons in your gut o Many are unidentified Prokaryotes are important o Prokaryotes cause half of all known human diseases What are prokaryotes? o Most are unicellular o Small in size~ 1-5 um o Thickness of a DVD o Most live solitarily or in colonies Getting to know prokaryotes o Nearly all have a call wall o Peptidoglycan= matrix of sugars and proteins o A functional classification of bacteria: gram-positive and gram-negative

Gram-positive are relatively simple cell walls with lots of Peptidoglycan Gram-negative have more complex cell walls with less Peptidoglycan, have a protective outer membrane containing lipopolysaccharides and antibiotic resistance. o
