Biology January 22, 2008 Origins of Biodiversity Exam 1—Monday, February 11 at 6:30 pm Exam 2—Monday, March 3 at 6:30 pm Exam 3—Monday, April 7 at 6:30 pm Final—Tuesday, May 6 Origin of Life The earth is about 4.6 billion years old o First prokaryotes: about 3.5 billion years ago o First eukaryotes: about 2.1 billion years ago o First humans: 0.01 million years ago All life relies on DNA-RNA-protein systems o Or slight variations Origin of life o There were four main stages in life coming about Abiotic synthesis of small organic molecules (amino acids, nucleotides) Joining of these small molecules into polymers (long chain of amino acids=protein; long chain of nucleotides=nucleic acid) Packaging of polymers into protobionts (droplets with membranes possible for inside to have different chemistry than surroundings) Origin of self-replicating molecules ( makes heredity possible makes natural selection possible) Point 1: Abiotic synthesis of small organic molecules
