Leah Smth GEOG 1982 Extra Credit Assignment Slum Dog Millionaire Slum Dog Millionaire is a powerful story that looks into the life of an orphaned Mumbai boy named Jamal Malik. By chance, he gets to be a contestant on the Indian version of “Who Wants to be a Millionaire” and is only one correct question away from winning the whole game. However, some people question how someone like Jamal, a man who grew up in the slums of Mumbai, could be doing so well on the show when people more educated than him continue to lose. Jamal is taken into custody by the police on accusations of cheating, but Jamal never confesses. He claims that he knew all the answers from past life experiences. This film is a series of flashbacks throughout Jamal’s life, which turns out to be filled with hurt, despair, and sacrifice. A major theme in Slum Dog Millionaire is how gender plays a role in society. Throughout the movie, we see that the males have power and control over women and children, which usually have a negative effect on the lives of the people they come in contact with. In the
