Smith 1 Leah Smith GEOG 1982 Writing Assignment #2 “Tortola” by Richard Goodman The town of Tortola, a so-called seaside paradise that attracts tourists from all over the world, which is found in the Caribbean islands, is no such dream place after all according to Richard Goodman. He went in search of solitude from the busy streets of New York City, but found the getaway to be an unnerving and upsetting destination. Tortola was filled with sexist conditions towards women that dominated the lives of its citizens. Every country is different when it comes to the gender roles of males and females. In the United States, both sexes are treated with equal respect and are not discriminated against. Laws are passed to enforce this rule, and are not taken lightly. Unfortunately, this equality was not found in the Caribbean city of Tortola, particularly in the case of the housekeepers Goodman met, Sandra and Cleo. When Goodman first met these two women, it seemed as though they were fun, loving, flirty residents of Tortola. Little did he know that the men in their life treated them as if they were below them, like they were not worthy of a man’s respect or attention. These women were
