Chapter2-The Primeval Story CREATION STORIES Genesis 1-11 not in any particular chronological order, however serve as a proper introduction Two different accounts of creation in Genesis 1:1-2:3 and Genesis 2:4-3:24-possibly arriving from two different oral traditions(they differ in portrayal of God) Biblical scholars believe in a possibility of four sources whom constructed the bible Documentary Hypothesis-divides the Torah into Yahwist(9 th century B.C.E.), Elohist(8 th century B.C.E.), Deuteronomist(7th-6 th century B.C.E.), and Priestly(6th-5 th century B.C.E.) Elohim and Christianity creation story is different in that it is monotheistic Priestly Account(opening of Genesis) we are made in the likeness of God, creation of earth is a positive event, YHWH(Yawweh) is the only God, God is more powerful than solely creation, God designed the world to be fiat (by the divine spoke word) Yahwist Account(follows Priestly Account) God is human like(anthropomorphism) Israelite worship life- b/c humans exercise dominion God can rest on the Sabbath Catholic and Protestants view opening of bible as myths(stories that people tell about themselves and their origins in order to teach the most profound truths that the culture holds) THEIR WAS NO INTENTION BY ANY OF THE WRITERS OF GENESIS TO PROVIDE A SCIENTIFIC ORIGIN OF THE UNIVERSE, instead it was used to affirm that God created the earth HUMANITY AND SIN Human beings are created by God and dependent upon him for life, thus he should be praised Humans are created in the likeness of God, higher up on food chain than most animals Humans are intrinsically good …but capable of sin(THE FALL) GOD Israelites may not have always been monotheistic Omnipotence- all-powerul(YHWH is considered all-powerful)
