2 Every cell is surrounded by a plasma membrane , a continuous membrane composed of a lipid bilayer with proteins floating within it and protruding from it. ECF and ICF Dr. George Papanicolaou has saved the lives of millions of women by popularizing the Pap smear - a screening for early signs of cervical cancer. In the past 50 years death from cervical cancer have dropped nearly 70% Today a patient, Jan Melton, who had an abnormal Pap smear a few months ago, is returning to her family physician for a repeat test. These results may determine if she should undergo treatment for cervical cancer. Cancer is a condition in which a small group of cells starts to divide uncontrollably and fails to differentiate into specialized cell types. Cancerous cells that originate in one tissue can escape from that tissue and spread to other organs through the circulatory system and the lymph vessels, a process known as metastasis QST Why does the treatment of cancer focus on killing cancerous cells?
