Feb 27, 2009 Notes Project Journal 3 Review Consumption and Self-Concept Exam 1 Review Consumption and Self-Concept o Identity marketing: where consumers alter some aspect of their selves to advertise for a branded product. Why? Sense of belonging, individualization while belonging to a brand o The extended self Those external objects that we consider a part of us comprise the extended self Four levels of extended self have been described: Individual Level Family Level Community Level Group Level o Individual: the things that surround your person: belongings, clothes, watch etc. (Suit ad, great minds think alike, you are what you wear) o Family: immediate surroundings (IKEA ad, how decorate home says who you are and is an extension of yourself that people can make assumptions of) o Community: heartfelt feeling of where you grew up: park, school, neighbors, local stores, neighborhood o Group: (Pats tattoo fan) come together under belonging to one institution, lets people know part of this group.
