9/12/08 7:00 AM Senate Passes ADA Amendments Unanimously By Kathy Gurchiek A landmark bill that amends the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) to clarify what constitutes a covered disability passed the U.S. Senate unanimously in a voice vote Sept. 11, 2008, and was on its way to the House for a vote expected in the near future. The legislation, S 3406 , was introduced into the Senate on July 31, 2008, and received support from the Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM), the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, the National Association of Manufacturers and the HR Policy Association. Sens. Tom Harkin, D-Iowa, and Orrin Hatch, R-Utah, sponsored the amendment , which clarifies the intent of the legislation that was signed into law by President George H. Bush in 1990. Seventy-three senators co-sponsored the amendment, which, like the original law, enjoyed bipartisan support. The amendment “would reverse court decisions that have interpreted the ADA’s
