How they evolved? - 18 islands, 5 inhabited - 2 main inhabitants -cactus finch -medium ground finch -40 species of plants -banded about 1000 finches -both grew up in England -Darwin filled up 18 notebooks of study -Giant tortoise -175 year, about 400 lps -otters, finches, tortoises, iguanas -Evolution= genetics and natural selection -hybridizing -drought of 1977 the most severe drought, 550 days without water -400 to 500 small finches died -Darwin only saw 4 islands -species 1million to 3 million years ago originated -all but 1% of species have gone extinct -1978 most important trip to Galapagos -medium ground finch was becoming a larger species -1983 the weather erupted again with El nino -Santa Cruz recorded 3 times their worst rainfall -rained for 8 months Population grew from 150 to nearly 1000 of finches after the rain subsided -the smaller billed finches survived through the rainfall Darwin's finches evolved again ...
